Food in Bosnia and Herzegovina is not traditionally vegan-friendly. There is a lot of meat and dairy, and it’s hard to find other options. However, Sarajevo is definitely changing that narrative, and I managed to find quite a few options there. This blog post will tell you the best tried and tested vegan food in Sarajevo so that you don’t have to worry about finding something that’s good for you. The list is not exhaustive!

Sham Restaurant

I always like to find restaurants that offer vegan versions of traditional foods of a country, and Sham Restaurant did just that. Just on the edge of the old town of Sarajevo, there was almost no-one in there when I found it. However, the food was great. They had vegan versions of typical Bosnian dishes including cevapi, burek, and sarma, as well as a whole host of other dishes like falafel, salads, soups, and more. I really enjoyed it.

Veganer

Veganer is a fully vegan restaurant great for wraps, bowls, and salads. It’s a short walk from the old town. There is limited seating inside but the service is fast and they have lots of options. My wrap was great.

Falafel Restaurant

As you can imagine, Falafel Restaurant has plenty of falafel-based dishes that cater to vegans and vegetarians. It is in the old town and has lots of options.

Arabic Restaurant Abu Zadallah

While this restaurant is not fully vegan, it has plenty of options, including falafels, vegetable dishes, and more.

Tips for Visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina as a Vegan

Even though there are a growing number of vegan-friendly restaurants in Sarajevo, and the list above is not exhaustive, I recommend staying somewhere with cooking facilities. There are small supermarkets in all towns and cities, as well as fruit and veg stalls where you can purchase ingredients at very low prices. If you can then cook in your accommodation, this is always a good option.
