Bosnia and Herzegovina is a small country in the Balkan region of Europe filled with history, interesting towns and cities, and beautiful nature. While it may seem challenging to get around the country, from my experience it is very doable to reach the best spots with public transport. This blog will tell you the best ways to get around Bosnia and Herzegovina by bus and train.

How to get from Sarajevo Airport to the City Centre

While taking a taxi is always an option, if you arrive or leave from Sarajevo airport, you can also get into the city with the 200E airport bus. It only goes once an hour on most days, and you’ll find the timetable at the bus stop outside the airport. You can also see it below. It costs 5 BAM (€2.50) one way, and you can pay in cash on the bus. Google Maps is very good at telling you which stop to get off at, so all you need to do is follow that. It takes about 40 minutes to an hour to get into the centre of Sarajevo from the airport.

How to get around Bosnia and Herzegovina by Train

All of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s main cities are served by train, including Sarajevo and Mostar. You can check the official website for train times here. I would recommend buying a ticket at the train station, however, as it is much simpler. You can do this on the day of your train.

How to get between Sarajevo and Mostar by Train

One of the most popular routes is between Sarajevo and Mostar, so here is a little guide to getting between the two cities by train.

The train goes twice a day between Mostar and Sarajevo:

  • Mostar - Sarajevo: 06:36 and 17:09

  • Sarajevo - Mostar: 07:15 and 16:46

The train ticket will cost you 16.90 BAM (approx. € 8.70) for a one-way ticket, or 27 BAM (approx. €13.80) for a return ticket. The journey is 2 hours.

Make sure you are sitting on the right hand side of the train when leaving Mostar, and the left hand side when leaving Sarajevo for the best views!

How to get around Bosnia and Herzegovina by Bus

Bosnia and Herzegovina is also really well connected by buses, although these often take longer than trains. Like the trains, you can also book bus tickets at the bus station on the day of travel. However, during the high season (summer), I would recommend booking in advance on Traveling.com. Regardless of which option you choose, you will need to pay a station tax of 1 BAM when you arrive.

How to get between Sarajevo and Mostar by Bus

Getting between Sarajevo and Mostar by bus is also a popular option. There are more frequent buses than trains, so it’s a good option if you don’t want to travel early in the morning or late in the evening. However, the bus takes an hour or more longer than the train, and it is double the price. Having done both, I would recommend the train over the bus.

If you take the bus between Sarajevo and Mostar, it goes on the other side of the river to the train. So, for the best views, make sure you are sitting on the left hand side of the bus when leaving Mostar, and the right hand side when leaving Sarajevo!

I hope this helps you plan your trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina. I absolutely loved the country and was blown away by its natural beauty. Taking public transport is always the most sustainable mode of travel, so please prioritise this wherever you can. As always, remember to only leave your footprints behind :)
