Where does the Marshrutka from Bishkek to Karakol leave from?
The marshrutka to Karakol leaves from Bishkek Avtovokzal (Бишкек Автовокзал). It’s in the north part of Bishkek, and you can easily get there by taking a Yandex which will cost you 300-400 som (approx. £2.50 - £3.40) from the city centre or just south of it.
Which Marshrutka goes from Bishkek to Karakol?
Most of the marshrutkas go via the northern shore of Issyk Kul as it’s the faster and smoother route, and it is usually marshrutka 501 that you will take. They have signs in the window that say Karakol in Russian, and it’s pretty easy to decipher. When you get to the bus station, you’ll be approached by several drivers, so don’t worry about finding the right one - it will find you! There are plenty of options as the marshrutkas go very regularly.
What time do the Marshrutkas go from Bishkek to Karakol?
As with all marshrutkas in Kyrgyzstan, there is no set timetable for any of the routes. The marshrutkas leave when they are full. The marshrutkas from Bishkek to Karakol leave from around 7am and run pretty regularly, maybe every 20-30 minutes or so. You won’t be waiting for one for long.

What is the Marshrutka journey from Bishkek to Karakol like?
The journey by marshrutka from Bishkek to Karakol takes around 6 hours. The vehicles are generally quite comfortable, but the quality will vary, so it’s mostly luck. There is no air conditioning on them, but the windows will be open so you won’t get too hot.
You will have a stop about 2 hours into the journey where you can go to the toilet and get food and water if you need. The toilets are unsurprisingly squat only and they cost 15 som (approx. £0.13), but that includes both toilet paper and soap. They were relatively clean.
The road on the northern shore of the lake is in decent condition so the ride was comfortable (I was sitting at the very back so it would be even better at the front). You’ll be dropped in Karakol where you can take a Yandex to your accommodation.
It was a very easy ride from Bishkek to Karakol by marshrutka, and it’s the cheapest and most sustainable option for doing the journey.
