Vegan Food Guide: Klosters

Switzerland. The land of cheese and meat. I was dreading going to Switzerland as a vegan, and to be honest, it was extremely difficult. However, in the small town of Klosters, next door to Davos, the home of the annual World Economic Forum convention, there were options out there. I put this partly down to the international exposure that this area of Switzerland gets, and partly down to the fact that it is in the German-speaking part of the country (rather than the French). The food in this town is not cheap by any means, and there is always the option of buying and cooking for yourself, but here are some places that I tried and tested as a vegan. In a lot of these places, nothing was listed on the official menu, and I had to ask the waiter who usually had something to offer, so don’t be shy!

Wynegg: Klosters town

This restaurant had an extensive menu, and even had a little ‘vegan’ symbol next to the appropriate meal. For several of the options, the chef was able to customise the dish to be vegan-friendly. From soups, salads, and a vegan ratatouille with black rice (my choice), the food was delicious and I would recommend heading to this cosy restaurant for dinner.

Al Capone: Klosters town

This Italian restaurant has a much more casual vibe and the prices were lower than most places in town. The pastas and pizzas on offer were numerous, it was so hard to decide! There were a couple of pasta dishes for vegans, including Napolitana and arrabiata, and I veganised my pizza by asking for it without cheese. They were very happy to comply and it was so delicious that we went back twice!

Alpina: Klosters town

The restaurant attached to the Hotel Alpina didn’t show anything on their menu that was vegan-friendly, only some veggie options. But the waiter revealed the chef had a risotto with coconut milk on offer, and it was yum. Don’t be afraid to ask!

Berggasthaus Parsennhütte: On the mountain

Located right next to the Parsennhutte ski lifts, this self-service offered many options for vegans, and it was fast, relatively cheap, and easy. There were different spaghetti dishes available, salads, soups, and a veggie burger, although make sure you avoid the burger sauce.

Bergrestaurant Weissfluhjoch: On the mountain

The view from this restaurant would have been enough without the vegan spaghetti bolognese! It was really tasty.

Totalp: On the mountain

We didn’t eat here, but I went in to have a look at the menu and saw several options. Aside from the classic pasta, there were also veggie toasts, soups, and salads. The view from here is also incredible!

One to avoid: Steinbock

This hotel-restaurant was recommended to us by the receptionist at our hotel. There was a salad on the menu, but you’ll have to ask for it without bacon and cheese. The waitress recommended the vegetarian dishes, but they were full of cream and cheese so unfortunately not ideal.

I love these signs!

The moral of the story here is: just because it isn't on the menu, doesn't mean there is nothing for you. You will find most places just want a happy customer :)
